For what seems like months now, the media has been centered on Allen Iverson, and where he would be traded to. There were reports that he killed a deal to Charlotte at one point, despite the fact that he doesn’t have a no trade clause in his contract. That’s pretty damned good, for A.I. if that’s true.
As it turns out, Denver made themselves the fool at this dance. All day today I heard about how this will work out great in Denver, but I don’t see it. A.I. is A. I.. Period. He is not going to change because he has Melo alongside him. It just isn’t going to happen. Remember when Gary Payton and Karl Malone went to the Lakers, and everyone was annoiting them the champs? How did that work out for those two guys? I know, it’s a different situation and no one is handing Denver the title, but my point is still solid. Unless the Nuggets are going to score 120 a night, this is going to be a huge debacle. I can’t wait.
Okay, I’m back from haitus. Well, not really. I go back on it this weekend for the holidays. You see, I can’t blog with the family here, or when I am there. Back to work now…
Over the past week we have seen Scott Boras attempt to play his game with the Boston Red Sox. You see, Boras represents Daisuke Matsuzaka. Boras wound up flinching first, however, when it got close to deadline time. Hard to blame him when he would not have gotten a dime if a deal wasn’t struck. Still, this goes down has an L for Boras, and I for one am thrilled to see it.

It’s good, however, for Matsuzaka as well. If he would have gotten the $100mil that they were reportedly asking for, the pressure on him to perform would have been outrageous. Think about it, Alex Rodriguez was considered a bargain for Texas by some people in the media, but most people couldn’t look past his paycheck to see his play on the field. Same would have been true with Matsuzaka, unless he comes out and wins the Cy Young and a World Series MVP. As it stands, the Red Sox still have to pay over $100mil for him, but the first $51mil goes to the Seibu Lions. I don’t think most fans will hold that against him.
So where does this leave the Red Sox? In pretty damned good hands, in my opinion. I think Matsuzaka is going to be a star, in a pitching heavy American League. I can’t wait to see him go up against Francisco Liriano, but that may not happen until 2008 because of Liriano’s injury. Let’s not forget, either, that Roger Clemens may still make his return to Boston. That would be one damned impressive 1 – 2 punch.
Well, it’s been over a week now since we found out that Tom O’Brien (TOB) would be the next head football coach for NC State University. At first I was a little shocked, as I honestly did not see this one coming. When the TOB news hit, however, I was off and running with it, as displayed here. I have admittedly been slow to delve deeper into this hire, and now that the press conference is over, and he’s officially the head ball coach, it’s time for me to go in depth.

On Saturday night, NC State played host to Savannah State for a non-conference basketball game. I mean a non-conference scrimmage, really. Isn’t that what most of the cup-cake non-conference games are? Only Savannah State got to play in storied Reynolds Coliseum. In fact, they got to see Sidney Lowe walk the sidelines at Reynolds for the first time in his young head coaching career. Just the thought of that kind of gives me chills. Imagine how it must have been for Sid.

It doesn’t look like the Rolling Tide were able to convince Rich Rodriguez to break out into their favorite Lynyrd Skynyard anthem. Thus my coaching search brackets are all shot to hell! Where does this leave Alabama? Paul Johnson would be my best guess, but that is all it is. Mike Leach perhaps? He was supposedly a target of Miami’s, so he may be “available” if you know what I mean. Alabama just got Beamered. Caliparied. Well now I guess we can move on to calling it Rodriguezed from now on. At least until next week when someone uses BC to get a raise.

Well, only a few hours after I write how I think Miami will not have a coach for a little while longer, and that they may make a push for Nick Saban, they threw the red flag at me! It’s being reported that Miami is set to promote current defensive coordinator Randy Shannon to the much maligned post of head coach.
Here is a list of links on the move:
That should get you up to date on the hire. Feel free to point and laugh at me and my Saban Theory!

The Wolfpack played in their second road game of the season last night at West Virginia. They were handed their second straight loss. This brings them to 5 – 2 on the young season. Here are some highlights of what went wrong for the Pack.
Turnovers were a killer. State turned it over 17 times, to WVU’s 7.
Perimeter defense. WVU was 13 – 28 from three point land. State, on the other hand, was 3 – 16.
It’s hard to point at much more than that. I didn’t get to see the game, so I am judging it from the box score. Please keep that in mind.
Ben McCauley and Brandon Costner both had good games for the Pack, who only played 6 players. Both players poured in 15 points apiece, and grabbed a combined 13 rebounds. The Pack did turn it around on the boards after the debacle on the glass at Virginia. The pulled down 33 to WVU’s 26. Problem is that 11 of WVU’s were offensive boards.
Gavin Grant had a horrible day at the office. He turned the ball over 9 times, and was only 3/10 from the floor. He did score 10 points, dish out 6 dimes, and grab 6 boards however.
The breakout game finally came for Courtney Fells. He didn’t shoot great from the floor, but he wound up with 17 points and 6 rebounds.
So with four of the starters in double figures, it’s really hard to figure out where the extra 20 points that they need are going to come from. Let’s hope Atsur comes back healthy sooner rather than later, and that Trevor Furguson turns out to be a stud.
The coaching searches in college football are getting really interesting. We have been discussing the Tom O’Brien situation over at the blog on 850 the Buzz today, and the gang at State Fans Nation covered it as well. With this Tom O’Brien move to NC State, it’s going to create another BCS conference school without a coach. I thought I would take a minute and give you the rundown of the major openings, and what I think could happen here.

We’ll start with Tom O’Brien. On Wednesday the story broke that Tom O’Brien was NC State’s choice for the job of head football coach. Most of the chatter up until then was that Paul Johnson of Navy would be the main target. Turns out he wasn’t, and O’Brien was. This move will create another opening at BC, and it just struck me that Paul Johnson could wind up there.

Down in Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama is also looking for a new head football coach. All signs are pointing towards Rich Rodriguez from West Virginia to be named the new coach in a matter of days. Thus, the West Virginia job will open up. Look for Jimbo Fisher to land on his feet here, after lobbying hard for the NC State job.

This brings us to Miami. There is a lot of clamour that Mike Leach at Texas Tech may be the next guy. I am not so sure. Something tells me that Nick Saban may wind up playing a role here, if the search extends long enough. So the longer this thing drags out, the better it could wind up being for the U. Why do I think this is a possibility? It is because Saban was reportedly a candidate for the Alabama job, but they didn’t want to wait for the NFL season to end so they removed him from consideration today. Thus, it’s known that Saban is at least considering jumping back into the college ranks. Seriously, what better place to do that than Miami?
