Michigan State 81 NC State 58

The stage was set perfectly for the Wolfpack of NC State to let the nation know that they mean business this year. It was the feature game of the ACC/Big 11 “Challenge” on Wednesday night, on ESPN at 7, and it also marked the start of Jimmy V week on said network. Before the game there was an introduction by Coach K, who once again reminded us why we used to like him and how good he was to the revered Jimmy V. Then there was the replaying of the famous 1993 ESPY speech, in which Jimmy V accepted the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, and reminded us all of what is important in life. I can’t watch that speech without getting chills up my spine, and I’m not sure if it’s always at the same part of that epic monologue. This time it was when Jimmy V spoke about wanting to come back in 1994 and give the award. After watching that replay of the speech, I remembered once again why he was/is so loved and why his players would have run through mountains for him. Shit, I would have run through a cinder block wall last night. Unfortunately, it didn’t have the same affect on this version of the Wolfpack.

The nation was given it’s first opportunity to see this years version of Wolfpack basketball. While I can’t speak for the other 17 people who may have watched the game, I do have my own thoughts on what I saw.

That was quite an introduction, JJ.

NC State 66 William & Mary 47

It’s opening night for the latest installment of Wolfpack basketball. State was looking to make it 14 in a row on opening night, and William & Mary got more than it could handle. Granted, it’s William & Mary, and it’s a home game, but there were still a lot of questions heading into the game. In a relatively low scoring game, State only forced 9 turnovers but did manage to hold W&M to a paltry 29.1% from the floor. State, meanwhile, turned it over only one more time with 10, on it’s way to a decent 44.4%, despite shooting only 5 – 24 from 3 point land. Since there was no TV for the game, and I wasn’t at the game, I’ll have to break down the box score.
