With Farnold Degand’s season ending injury (torn ACL in his left knee) the point guard situation for Sidney Lowe’s Wolfpack is indeed in dire straits. While I personally wasn’t becoming a huge fan of Degand’s play, he was beginning to turn the corner and be productive in his last few games.
Now the burden of starting falls on true freshman Javi Gonzalez, who many felt coming into the year would wind up being the better choice at the point by tourney time. He did get some good reviews over the summer, and from what limited game action I have been able to see it did appear that he has some skills. Hopefully he will become who many in Wolfpack Nation hopes he will become.
As for the backup role, Marques Johnson is the new man in town. Recently becoming eligible because of transfer rules, Johnson apparently showed signs of life in the Seton Hall game. He remains a huge unknown at this point, so I don’t have a lot of insight into what I think he is capable of.
The other options are Courtney Fells and Gavin Grant. I don’ t like either option, mind you, but if a lineup with Grant at the point allows Big Ben, Hickson and Costner to all be in the starting lineup, then it might not be a bad thing. I don’t see this happening, though, as it looks like Sid likes for Big Ben to come off the bench and provide a spark down low.
Alpha has a good write up of the Seton Hall game, and also a good break down of the Degand injury.
The box score from the last few games can be found here:
NC State 66, Davidson 65
NC State 85, Cincy 77
NC State 79, Seton Hall 73
Just wanted to say a quick Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah and all that stuff to everyone. I’ll be out of town for a few days, and then hopefully things will return to normal post Christmas!
Last night in Raleigh State played host to Davidson, and almost left a W on the floor again. I didn’t see the game, but our good friend Alpha has a write up of it here. A quick glance at the box score shows that for the first time this year there was double figure scoring from Hickson, Costner & McCauley. Grant added, actually led the Pack, with 15 of his own and two huge free throws in the final minute of play that proved to be the deciding points. The other thing I noticed was that there was little to zero production from either the one or two. Again.
Oh, and Marques Johnson didn’t get off the wood a single time, other than to put a chair out for someone during a time out. Just a little odd, seeing as it was his first eligible game, and the other guards don’t seem to have done very much.
For the past couple of months we all knew that the Arkansas Razorbacks would be hiring a new head football coach, we just didn’t know who it would be. With all the speculation that it would be Butch Davis (who thankfully has stayed in Chapel Hill), then Jim Grobe (thanks, but no thanks Hogs), and let’s not forget Tommy Bowden (are you crazy, he can’t please Clemson fan, let alone Arkansas fan). Well, now we finally have our answer, and for me it came from left field.
my thoughts and some links after the jump… Continue reading ‘We can finally move on… Updated’
