NC State Loses Costner, Ferguson, Gains a Recruit

Yesterday, Brandon Costner announced that he will enter the NBA draft pool.  Also leaving the team will be Trevor Ferguson, a redshirt junior, who is hanging up his sneakers for good.

Costner, who is set to graduate this May, will most likely hire an agent as he does not want to return to NC State.  We heard rumors of this earlier this year, and anyone with a little bit of common sense could see this eventually happening.  Best of luck to Brandon.  Hopefully we will remember the redshirt freshman who rolled State to the ACC Championship game in 2007, and not the overweight, moody version we saw in 2008 and 2009.

Ferguson is a little surprising, but only because he still has a year of eligibility left.  I do not know if he is set to graduate in May as well, but he did have another free year of college life if he wanted it.

Also, on Monday head coach Sidney Lowe gave a sholly to 6′6″ Josh Davis out of Athens Drive High in Raleigh.  The 210 pound forward put up great numbers this year (25.7ppg and 12rpg) but did not garner much attention from major programs.  Maybe Coach Lowe has found a diamond in the rough?  We will see…

The Ferguson move does free up a scholly, but most of the good post players are already committed.  Of course, John Wall is still out there, but who is he going to feed the ball to if he plays in Raleigh?  Other than Tracy Smith, the post is completely void.

No love for Dennis Horner and his trailer park tattoo? He’s not a great post player, but he does play the post and will most likely be a starter next year. What is your projected starting 5 for NXSU next year?

I like Horner, but I don’t think he is a star. He is a role player that can do a lot of things, and he is a good cog to have. I would not want to see him go, if that means anything.

I guess right now it’s Smith, Horner, CJ Williams, Brown and Javi. Am I missing anyone?

I still think Degand is better suited to play the 2 and a limited role as a backup to the PG. I don’t know if he would be a starter, but it’s something to think on.

Unfortunately, I don’t get to see them play enough to comment on that, Pat. That would also explain my lack of coverage this season.

Richard Howell is a power forward and looks to be an immediate impact player. Lorenzo Brown and Scott Woods are guards, Woods a definite #2. I like Horner off the bench. Smith,Howell, Williams, Javi, and Woods, Brown or Degand. I don’t know if Degand can defend enough to start and I don’t know if he shoots well enough for the #2. Johnny Thomas might also get a look, though I see him as front liner. We may very well start two true Freshmen next season. Ferguson graduates this summer.

Thanks for the insight, Fav. Keep the good stuff coming.

This kid davis is actually 6′5 180 and I don’t understand the logic.

Frankie, I have read that too, but I’m sticking with the N&O’s numbers for now. That is a pretty big discrepancy at 30# though. My thoughts on this are that you need role players to succeed, and Davis may very well turn out to be a great role player. He could also be that kid that no one recruited with a chip on his shoulder that turns to be a hidden gem. Right now, dude is a complete unknown as far as I am concerned. We will have to hope for the best, I guess.

Thanks for the info, though, Frankie. I do appreciate it.
