Most of us have already heard about Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable punching an assistant coach Randy Hanson in the jaw. Cable broke that jaw with his fist. Now it looks like felony assualt charges are in the works, and Cable could be facing jail time and worse, a suspension from the NFL.
Suspension? Seriously, it is a joke that this dude is still allowed to walk the sidelines as it is. You can not punch people, especially at work. Why this guy was not fired on the spot is beyond me. I’m guessing Skeletor, er, Al Davis likes a little fire in his head coach. Hope he also likes the lawsuit that Hanson would be a complete fool for not filing.

Lost in all of this is that we don’t know WHAT he actually hit him for. I’ve heard conflicting stories from different news agencies, and I haven’t heard either man involved say definitively what lead up to it. I’ve heard meeting disagreement (very bad if true), and I’ve heard personal provocation (not so bad). If the dude was running his mouth about Cable’s wife or some such, I don’t have that big of a problem with it. If he was just being a bullying boss, I’ve got a huge problem with it. The funniest thing about it all, to me, is that it happened in Oakland. How apropos.
This it true, Pat, we don’t know why he belted him. What we do know is that he is his boss, and no matter what he may have said to get hit dude should not have railed him. Not if he wanted to keep his job, anyway. Some things are worth losing your job over, and this might be one of those situations, but you can’t hit someone at work and expect to still be around.
That’s the other thing, I’m pretty sure this took place at a hotel and not in a team meeting room. I could be wrong, but I remember hearing that it happened at a hotel in the preseason and most likely was off the clock. The boss should never go around punching random dudes in the face, but the fact that the police have taken so long to jump on this I think should give everyone pause before they say Cable punched an employee in the face at work. I don’t even like the Raiders, but I do have to defend someone’s right to punch an asshole in the face when said asshole is being an asshole.
There was an article on ESPN yesterday about the incident. Hanson says he was “blindsided with a sucker punch” and that Cable was screaming “I’ll fucking kill you” over and over as he assaulted dude. Hanson also says he predicted the day before the incident that Cable was going to blame him for the DBs’ confusion in games after Cable held a private meeting with them. Cable did come out of the meeting blaming Hanson for the DBs, but it was because the DBs blamed Hanson for their confusion. The fight happened the next day. There was no mention of where it happened. It LOOKS like Hanson and Cable had a beef and Hanson ran his mouth a little too loud for a little too long and got the shit slapped out of him for it. Hanson, to me, is sounding more and more like the problem in all of this. Why else would the ass kickee be trying to cover his ass and the ass kicker be keeping his mouth shut?
Pat, it looks like you are sticking up for a complete jackass.

Cable doesn’t like Hanson for some deep rooted reason that I do not know of. Dude should be fired, plain and simple.
That article is about the same as the ESPN one I read. Keep in mind that it is only Hanson’s side of the story. The police still have not arrested Cable, so I’m guessing his version to the media may not be the most truthful version.
I’m not defending anyone, especially not a Raider. I’m really just defending every man, and our inalienable right to bust a sucker chump punk in the jaw every now and then.
The authorities are declining to pursue charges against Cable. I figured anything Hanson said publicly would need to be taken with a grain of salt. Cable did the right thing through out by keeping his mouth shut.
Looks like you may have been right here, Pat, but I’m not sold that Cable didn’t do anything wrong here. My reason? That the authorities said in the beginning that this was a “textbook felony assault case”. I guess maybe the assaulted one is just not credible enough to go forward.
Here is my guess of what happened: there was some sort of confrontation; Cable definitely did something to Hanson most likely because the dude either made the first move and Cable was protecting himself, tried to sucker punch Cable and misjudged the big guy’s ability to protect himself, or somehow goaded Cable into it then hurt himself falling down. Obviously everything we heard at first was skewed towards Hanson so I will assume that he/someone near him was leaking info.
OR
Hanson got his ass whipped by Cable and Ol’ Crazy Uncle Al called his mafia boys to straighten everything out for him.
