Cardinals Nab Holliday

In the first big move before the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline, the St. Louis Cardinals have acquired Matt Holliday from the Oakland A’s.  In exchange for Holliday, the Cards will be sending three prospects to Oakland:

Brett Wallace

Clayton Mortensen

Shane Peterson

Due to time constraints, we can not give you insight into the dudes getting moved for Holliday.

Devine to Meet with Dr. Andrews – Updated 4/6/09

Joey Devine is going to start the year on the Prior List, and is on his way to be examined by the one and only Dr. James Andrews.  When baseball fans hear Dr. Andrews’ name, they grab their blankies and call their mommies.  It almost always means a lost season.

So grab Brad Ziegler if he is available in your league.  He will get all of the saves for Oakland while Devine is out, which will be at least three weeks, and could lock the job down for the year if he performs well.

UPDATE 4/6/09

Devine was placed on the 60 day Prior List, retroactive back to March 31.  Dude meets with Dr. Andrews on Tuesday, but it is looking like a lost season for the former NC State closer.

Phillies Strike Back

Over the past few weeks we have seen the likes of CC Sabathia and Rich Harden get traded to the NL. If the Phillies needed starting pitching help before, now it’s even more desperate. So how does Phillies GM Pat Gillick respond? He brings in Oakland’s “ace”, Joe Blanton. The same Joe Blanton that has given up 23 earned runs over his last five outings? Yep. That’s the one. You know Joe. Right? Well, at least the Phillies didn’t give up too much for him. They merely sent two of their top ten prospects to the A’s in two bagger Adrian Cardenas and southpaw pitcher Josh Outman, along with outfield prospect Matt Spencer. Look for Blanton to go five innings a start and hand the ball off to Adam Eaton on several occasions. The Phillies needed starting pitching help, they didn’t need to bring in another version of the aforementioned Eaton. The Mets are laughing at you right now.

This has zero bearing in your fantasy baseball league. If it does, find a new league. Seriously. If either Adam Eaton of Joe Blanton are factors in your league, just walk away and never look back.
