Myers Done in Philly

According to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, the Philadelphia Phillies have informed Brett Myers that they would not be resigning him this off-season.  This is good news, as the Phils do not really need his circus act hanging around.  He is a complete jerk, and likes to beat women.  Do not let the door hit you on the way out of town.

Brett Myers Has a Black Eye?

Apparently Brett Myers fell out of a car and got a black eye.  He did not get said black eye because he got in a fight at a restaurant/bar.  Sure Brett.  You didn’t beat your wife in Boston either.

Happ Placed in the Bully

J.A. Happ made the Philadelphia Phillies opening day roster, just not as a starter.  Dude is officially in the bully until Brett Myers loses his next four games in a row and is put in limbo, or until one of the other starters goes down for one reason or another.  It could be soon, too.

Cole Hamels will spend time on the Prior List this year.  I’ll be shocked if he does not.  Reason being his workload the past two seasons, and his elbow already showing signs of trouble this year.

Jamie Moyer is old.  Dude could break a hip anytime now.  Well, either that, or hitters could start teeing off on him like it’s batting practice.  I think he may actually throw slower than a batting practice hurler.

Joe Blanton is Joe Blanton.  He pitched well for the Phils last year, but I’m not sold on him yet.  Main reason being he is fat and awkward.

Chan Ho Park could get blown up at any point too.  Let us be honest here, this Phils rotation is not made up of all star talent.  What it is made up of, however, is just enough to keep the Phils in contention and let their offense and bully do the real work.  It was successful last campaign, so who am I to question the philosophy?

Personally, I would rather see Happ go to AAA and continue to stay in starter shape.  That way, when something goes wrong and they need him as a starter, he will be ready to step in and contribute.  Dude should probably be the three in this rotation as it is, but I can not dispute Park getting the five hole over him.

Jordan Schafer Leaves an Impression

Last night Jordan Schafer saw his first time in a big league game.  Starting in center and hitting eighth in the order, Schafer drilled a pitch over the left field wall for is first homerun, in his first MLB at-bat.  He will not be batting eighth for long, as he projects as a leadoff hitter, but manager Bobby Cox wants to keep some of the pressure off of Jordan.  If you have a roster spot that you can spare, he is worth an add in case he catches fire.

For a great write up about Schafer, check out Gangi’s profile on Friday.  As we have been doing for the past year, we will continue to cover Schafer and his progress here at The Sports Idiot.

Other news from last night’s opener:

Brett Myers got lit up again.  In the first two innings he gave up three dingers, and he allowed eight hits overall.  His K:BB ratio sits at 6:1, which isn’t bad though.  His 6.00 ERA, not going to work.  Zolecki’s writeup is here.

Derek Lowe is good.  Damned good.  Mike Gonzalez put some drama in the game, surrendering a run and putting two ducks on the pond, before striking out Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez to end the game.  No save for Gonzo, as it was a four run lead when he entered the game.  Bowman’s writeup is here.

Phillies Get Some Cap Relief

Not Adam Eaton, but a POS nonetheless?

Not Adam Eaton, but a POS nonetheless?

Well, not really, but Adam Eaton is officially off of their hands.  The washed up starter was signed by the Baltimore Orioles after the Phils released him on Friday.  The salary implications?  If he makes the club, the O’s will be on the hook for $400K, while the Phils will be paying him about $8.15Mil.

In other Phils news, that fat, waste of skin Brett Myers says he has vanquished his demons and is ready to get back on track.  He also dropped about 35lbs, so maybe I won’t be able to call him fat anymore.  Either way, he still beat his wife if public.

None of this should impact fantasy baseball much.  Myers has upside, like he does every year, but also has his negatives.  Proceed with caution, but knowing that if Myers is indeed tuned in then he could have a huge year.
