You Stay Classy, Thamail Morgan

No, really.  You stay classy, dude.  Thamail Morgan is a former big time football recruit turned outcast turned hero.  I’m guessing Steve Spurrier thinks he is a big sissy, though.  I do not know what Morgan did, but apparently Morgan violated a school rule last January and was booted from the football team.  So he transferred from Newport to Cave City, which is 40 miles from his home.

Fast forward to this past weekend and Morgan showed that he has changed his unspecified ways.  Read the article, because Luke Matheson does a great job on this piece.

No, This Blog Is Not Dead

First off, thank you to those who have emailed asking if the blog was dead.  It is not, and updates will resume in the near future.  Unfortunately, the blog had to be put on the back burner for a few weeks while family business is attended to.  We are hoping that some sort of normalcy in our schedules is near, and that we will be able to hit the ground running full steam shortly.  Of course, when we do, we will not revisit what we have missed, so if there is something in particular that you have questions about please let us know.

And yes, I would absolutely take a flier on Brett Myers and Ryan Madson.  Brad Lidge is toast for this season, and maybe toast for Philly.  It’s like Houston all over again?

Eric Bruntlett Made History

Some of us were lucky enough to catch the 9th inning of the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets’ game on Sunday, the 23rd of August.  While we were in Brad Lidge meltdown bliss, and watching Eric Bruntlett make not one but two terrible plays, we saw the second ever game ending unassisted triple play.  Bruntlett was in the right place at the right time as he caught a Jeff Francoeur line drive, stepped on second to double up Luis Castillo, and then tagged out Daniel Murphy to complete the triple play.  Kudos to Eric Bruntlett for being at spot X when factor Y came into play.

Trade-O-Rama

A lot going on today as the non-waiver trade deadline hits.  Go to MLB.com for the latest news.

One thing we will hit on quickly, the Braves have reportedly traded Casey Kotchman for Adam LaRoche.  While we like Rochy, and would welcome him back, this deal is a little puzzling as Kotchman has to have more value than LaRoche.  One thing is for sure, this deal would make my wife happy, as “Clutch” (her pet name for LaRoche) is a favorite of hers.

The Braves Say They are Good Enough

Apparently Frank Wren, the GM for the Atlanta Braves thinks that his team has the pieces to win the World Series this year.  With the offense clicking over the past month, there is renewed optimism about this Braves team, and I am just as guilty as the next guy of liking this Braves squad.  However, they need a power bat if they want to be a serious threat to make the post season.  Of course, the last time we thought that the Braves added Mark Teixeira and granted our wishes.  How has that one worked out so far?  Great, for the Yankees I guess, but that does not help Brian McCann and Yunel Escobar out any.

If Wren thinks that this Braves team can catch the Philadelphia Phillies, then so be it.  While I do not agree with it, I am more than willing to take the embarrassment of being wrong.  With the Phillies working on adding either Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee to the mix, as a Braves fan it is hard to see how they can stand pat and not add some more offense.  If the goal is the wildcard, then by all means the Braves could make a run at it.

NFL Season Right Around the Corner – Fantasy Coverage to Follow?

With training camps breaking out this week, it is time to start getting ready to the 2009 NFL season.  What teams are you hyped for this year?  Have you scouted out your fantasy targets yet?  Do you even care about the NFL until baseball season is over?

One thing is for sure, a lot of people are into football.  Be it the American version, or the rest of the world’s (soccer), Sports Betting has taken over the sport.  Whether it is just a weekly pool, a fantasy league, or legitimate Football Betting, a lot of us get involved with gambling to a degree.  Good luck in your endeavors this season, no matter what the variety.

With the fantasy football season around the corner, we may or may not be doing some NFL fantasy coverage.  With baseball running deep into October, the Winter Meetings, and then the college sports coverage, time gets to be a premium.  We will do our best to keep you posted on anything major, though, and possibly provide some draft tips and sleepers.

Trade Deadline is Looming

Now that the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline is looming large, we want to remind you again to keep your eyes on MLBTradeRumors.com for the juicy goodness.  Tim Dierkes does a fine job over there, and almost always has current info up.  If a deal goes down, MLBTradeRumors.com will have full details in no time.  It must be nice to sit around in your underwear watching MLB Network all day, eh Tim?

Braves Neither Sellers Nor Buyers?

Atlanta Braves GM Frank Wren may be sitting out the trading game the next two weeks. Or, he may be setting up his next big move. It is pretty clear that here at The Sports Idiot we think the Braves need to add a power bat. Wren seems to think the team is set the way that it is.

With the Braves plating the sixth most runs in the Bigs over the last 30 days, it does seem like the offense may be fixed. Still, if the Braves could add a power bat to the mix, it would only serve to help them end their postseason drought. With Wren publicly stating that he likes the team the way it is, it would not surprise me to see them take a risk and move some pieces around for a bat. With Tim Hudson on schedule to return in mid-August, they will need to make room for him in the rotation somehow. With the team the way that it is now, that just is not possible.
So who might the Braves move and for whom? We really do not have a clue.

Tampa Finally Beats the Phils

Well, the Devil Rays could not beat the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 World Series.  Interleague play this year?  Not so much.  Well, they have finally found a way to beat the Phillies.  Apparently Clearwater was going to give out an estimated 25,000 Phillies bobbleheads at upcoming promotions.  Problem is, they can not do that under current marketing agreements, nor should they be able to.  Seriously, should Tampa really have Phillies bobbleheads all over the place?  No, they should have Devil Rays ones.

This is just another reason why all farm teams should be close to home, and not in another MLB teams media market.
