As expected, Jake Peavy squashed the trade that would have sent him to the Chicago White Sox yesterday.  The confusing part here is why the Padres would even attempt to work on a deal with an AL team that is not on Peavy’s short list to begin with.  Note to self, before I try to trade a player with a full no-trade clause it might be a good idea to talk to said player first.  It is not like Peavy does not know that he could be traded, or that the Padres have been trying to move him, so why not talk to Jake before completeing a deal?  Because the Padres and GM Kevin Towers want to try and make Peavy look like an ass for killing the deal.  It is not going to work, Mr. Towers, because we already know who you are.

A deal has been struck that would send super stud Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox.  All that they are waiting on is Peavy’s approval, which is not guaranteed to happen.  It is well documented that Peavy wants to stay in the NL, and that he is happy staying in San Diego.  The players in the deal are unclear, so speculate away.

I do not see this deal going down.  Why would Peavy want to go to the White Sox?  They are not going to be in contention this year, are an AL squad, and just do not make a lot of sense for Peavy.  We’ll stay tuned, and try to let you know if something goes down.

There are tons of players in MLB that do not get anywhere near the attention or credit they deserve.  Jason Werth is one of those players, as anyone in the Philly market knows.  Well, now the rest of the league has caught on, because in a recent poll conducted by MLB.com, Major League execs and managers voted in favor of Werth and Adrian Gonzalez as the NL’s two most underrated players.

Lets be clear here, though, anyone who does not know who either Werth or Gonzalez are does not pay a lot of attention to baseball.  Werth just stole home last week, and Gonzalez has racked up a mere 15 homers so far this season (it’s still May in case you have not noticed).  Do not get me wrong, here at the Sports Idiot we are glad that the spotlight has been cast on these two very deserving guys, we just hope that none of our readers needed this poll to bring these guys to their attention.  Underrated?  Absolutely.  Unknown?  Hardly, and the article even says as much.  Good for Gonzalez, but even more so good for Werth.  Neither player should be a free agent in any of your leagues (unless they are AL only!).

It looks like the Jake Peavy era in Atlanta may have to wait, yet again.  It appears that Padres GM Kevin Towers does not like the progress made in talks with the Braves, or the Cubs for that matter.  This is getting ridiculous.  Almost as ridiculous as Padres Fan, who thinks the Braves offer of Yunel Escobar, Gorks Hernandez, Charlie Morton and Blaine Boyer/Jeff Locke is a lowball offer.  Towers sounds like he is going to open the bidding back up across the board.

According to CBS Sportsline’s Scott Miller, the Braves and Padres are about to finalize a deal that will send the 2007 NL Cy Young winner to Atlanta.  It looks like the holdup was getting a fourth player added to the deal, and hammering out the Hernandez/Flowers issue that arose the last day or so (the Pads turned their eyes to Flowers, who responded by cranking three homeruns yesterday and actually hired a skywriter to ask the Braves “Please don’t send me to Petco!” during the third inning).  See how the deal will look after the jump. It is looking more and more like Jake Peavy will be traded to the Braves at any moment. According to MLB.com, the Braves feel good about their offer for Peavy, but are getting increasingly frustrated with the Padres and GM Kevin Towers.  When it is all said and done, it looks like Atlanta will be sending SS Yunel Escobar, OF Gorkys Hernandez or OF Jordan Schafer, and either SP Charlie Morton or SP JoJo Reyes.  My thoughts after the jump. According to The Journal News’ Peter Abraham, Jake Peavy has already been told that he will be traded.  San Diego Padres GM Kevin Towers was quoted as saying “that train has left the station” to a small group of writers earlier today.  He revealed that there are three teams in the mix, all in the National League (see the Braves, Cardinals, and Cubs), and that a multi-team deal could be a possibility.

The National League limitations have officially pushed the Yankees out of the running, although some do not agree. Either way, this is about to get really interesting.

According to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs may be the new leaders in the Jake Peavy sweepstakes.  As we told you yesterday, Cubs GM Jim Hendry has been palling around with Pads GM Kevin Towers.  Now it looks like pieces of the puzzle are being put together, and that when it is complete Peavy will be pitching in Wrigley.

Rotoworld is saying that Felix Pie would have to be in the deal, and that Rich Hill, Sean Marshall, Ronny Cedeno, Mike Fontenot and Donald Veal could all be in play as well.  The other news is that the Cubs are going to go after free agent Ryan Dempster as well, who has been a Cub since 2004.

What you will read is that signing Dempster would make it less likely that the Cubs can bring Kerry Wood back.  Wood, also a free agent, would seemingly cost too much in addition to Dempster.  All that means is that it will finally be Carlos Marmol time, and Marmol was arguably the best pitcher in the bully for the Cubs this year.

San Diego Padres GM Kevin Towers has pretty much declared that a deal with either the Cubs, Dodgers or Braves will happen in the coming weeks.  Towers says that said teams are the three of the seven potential teams that Jake Peavy would accept a trade to.  He then went on to say that he is “down the road” in trade talks with two of those teams.  Meanwhile, Towers just played a round of golf with Cubs GM Jim Hendry and followed it up a few days later with some QT at the bowling alley.  Let us hope they shared a real vanilla Coke together, like I used to enjoy while at bowling class at NC State.
